Note: This speech was delivered only two months prior to the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which happened on 11 September 1857. Genesis 49:17 reads: “Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.”
