Joseph Smith, Jr. claimed that the Book of Abraham—part of the Pearl of Great Price—was “written by his [Abraham’s] own hand,” implying it was an autograph manuscript, personally penned by the patriarch himself. However, this assertion collapses under basic historical scrutiny. The papyrus on which the text was found dates to the Ptolemaic period (circa 3rd–2nd century BCE), nearly 2,000 years after Abraham would have lived, assuming a traditional biblical timeline around 2000 BCE. This vast chronological gap makes it impossible for the document to be an authentic autograph, or anything remotely close to Abraham’s own writing.
