Many outside of the LDS faith find it controversial that Joseph Smith was involved in treasure seeking, which included casting magical spells. Furthermore, he dictated most of the Book of Mormon while gazing at a stone placed inside a top hat—the very same stone and hat he had previously used in unsuccessful attempts to locate buried treasure.
