Joseph Smith asserted that God appeared to him personally and instructed him not to join any church. In the Pearl of Great Price (Joseph Smith – History 1:19), he described their creeds as “an abomination.”

Despite this, Joseph tried to join the Methodist Church, where his wife was a member.

Records indicate that he was expelled from the Methodist faith in 1828.
