Some have speculated the Times and Seasons (Vol. III pp. 749, 753) publication might have been a clerical error (an examination of the original document reveals the word ‘Nephi’ crossed out and the word Moroni* [inserted with an asterisk] noting a “Clerical Error”), which would seem to be innocent enough. However, 1) Joseph Smith was the editor of the Times and Seasons and would have noticed such a glaring error, and 2) Joseph Smith lived for two years after this was printed and never published a retraction.
